I must say that I was intrigued when I was told about this book. I am a sucker for a well written mystery and I must say this one is very well written . Who knew that you could write a mystery with a coffee shop as the center of all what goes on . This is where we meet Mason a big ole country boy , ex football player and writer. We also meet the memory of Earl Lightening Perkins a jazz player and former owner of Perk Noir. The story will take you on an adventure as you read there is also a second part to this book and its about concussions in the NFL and it adds to the story very nicely. I won't go into anymore detail about that part , you have to read that for yourself .I will say the characters are so well written and complex . The main character in the book for me is actually PERK NOIR, the jazz inspired coffee house. The shop holds so many memories and secrets that are just waiting to be unraveled. Mason is a good ole boy who use to play football, loves his dog and writes about a spy named Mia with her killer vagina . He is also on a quest to become an all knowing Perk kensie on all things lightening Perkins . When we first meet Mason we think of him as a good ole boy that loves his coffee and writing . As the story goes along there is much more going on inside that head of Mason's. He is suffering from something that happened in his NFL days that are making him rethink his sanity at one point . When we meet Shelly she is the quintessential fan girl / cosplayer . As we watch her and Mason grow closer we see them both mature and become more to each other then they want to admit. She is the kick in the ass that Mason needs to get through what he needs to do . To me they are a pretty kick ass couple that grow stronger with each turn of the page.
This book is a great weekend read . The author takes us on such an adventure and mixes in a little danger and romance. This book had me reading well into the night I just couldn't put it down . To me it had it all, history, some good comic relief and great pop culture references that will keep you reading . The big twist at the end was a mind blower for me . I so didn't see it coming at all . I must say that I was giggling and laughing at a few scenes in this book and I was also on the edge of my seat throughout most of the reading . the author balanced the comedy and the seriousness of the book quite well . I will also tell you and give you fair warning . If you start this book in the evening you will stay up late and have a book hangover. So if you want a great read for the lazy days at the cabin check it out .

Perk Noir A Mason Barnes Mystery edition by Chris Garson Jeffrey Kosh Christina Hargis Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Perk Noir is a charming, witty, (sometimes ruanchy), and intensely funny read that I'd recommend to anyone who loves coffee, girl ninjas, authors, and Cleveland! It's a fun read all the way through, and as a Clevelander this excellent work of fiction does me proud!
Totally enjoyed this book! It was a fun and interesting tale, woven with subtle poignancy that left me wanting more! I laughed a lot, and cried, and worried, but in the end it made me happy albeit not quite as satisfied as I expected. The author's ending was a shade disappointing because I felt he could have given readers an extra "punch" of satisfaction, and didn't. Overall, thoough, great read!
A fast moving story of some quirky characters in the Cleveland, Ohio area. Mason Barnes, a writer discovers new information about a famous Jazz musician. People familiar with Cleveland's history will get a kick out of all the local references. I enjoyed the twists and turns. Thank havens for people with big heads!
Perk Noir is an amazing story by a new up and coming author. The book begins with humorous strangeness one might find in a Key and Peele skit and by Chapter 15 becomes absolutely compelling. You will be delighted and surprised. Mr. Garson leads the reader through a serious of twists and turns worthy of the best mystery writers while seamlessly incorporating humor and romance. This is an entertaining read recommended for anyone who likes fun. Can't wait for his next book!
I love writing, myself, but this author takes a story and draws me into the characters as if I'm there. The personality of the main character is genius. The story line is intriguing and the use of adjectives really made this novel come to life. When a book can "bring me there," it's a keeper.
Only a man could have written about a Superwoman ( Mia Killjoy) whose "preternaturally strong vagina could rip off a man's pride" and be loved by so many male fans. The Greek myth endures into the 21st century evolved into male admiration for a strong woman. (except of course, her enemies)
Several mysteries entwine and compel in Chris Garson's quirky, humorous, and thought-provoking novel. Psychic events and scientific understandings validate the same phenomenon. Chris draws the reader into a fast moving (clearly fueled by much Perk) mystery of many levels. History including Lightning, the famous jazz pianist, (who is he?), continuing racism, romance, personal growth, Hollywood, and family dysfunction combine to guarantee a satisfying experience of laughter, surprise, and resolution.
Mason starts out as more of a caricature than a character, but the author develops him into a three dimensional guy anyone would love to sip a beer with - oh wait...sip a perfect cup 'o Perk with. An ex-jock obsessed with his own head, women's breasts, an arch nemesis that writes about buffalos, and the desire to solve the mystery around a beloved jazz singer, Mason takes us on a journey that explores such diverse topics as racial inequality and the real health care costs of playing professional football for the players and their families. Throw in lots of pop culture references, a cosplaying girlfriend, and a Yorkshire terrier, and you have a story to lose yourself in. Get a cup of coffee and settle in for a fun read!
