Perfect for fans of Storm Siren and Throne of Glass...

Something quite alarming has been happening to Princess Yavenna - heir to the throne of Tarhasta. Since her sixteenth birthday a year and a half ago, she’s been getting stronger and faster; quite shockingly so. She knows it certainly can’t be anything to do with magic - magic has been against the law for years in Tarhasta. But there’s not really anyone she can talk to about it, as her mother died when she was seven and her best friend Marco won’t discuss anything that might get him into trouble with Yavenna’s father King Yeroz. Well, Yavenna thought her father was King Yeroz - but when she is sent to Arvad to marry the notorious King Ulric against her will, Yavenna begins to find out nothing in her life is quite what she thought it was.

On the surface, Arvad is a fertile, prosperous country. But when she gets there, Yavenna discovers strange people with unexpected powers. And some of them seem a little too keen to stick uncomfortably close to her. Especially when Yavenna finds out she’s a bit more like some of them than she ever dreamt was possible.

Luckily for Yavenna, King Yeroz made sure she was brought up knowing one end of a bow from another. That comes in quite useful as she often makes too-rash decisions and can’t always keep her mouth shut. Sometimes those qualities don’t help when you’re trying to make friends in a foreign land. And they are definitely some of the worst qualities you could ever have when you find yourself falling in love…

Start reading today and enter Yavenna's world of secrets, danger, magic and romance.

Remnant of Power eBook J.A. Deakin Reviews

Loved this. It was action-packed and full of surprises. I really liked the main character and I am now going to get the second book.
---3.5 Stars---

Overall, this book was an engaging, entertaining, and intriguing read!

This book transports you into a magical and mysterious world filled with endless possibilities and the unknown.

This book follows Yavenna, a beautiful, young, sweet, innocent, 17-year-old princess who becomes blackmailed into marrying a mean, evil, brutal King.

Yavenna recently learns that she possesses some strong, powerful, magical powers that she had no idea she had. In addition, Yavenna discovers Mal, a handsome 18-year-old who is also going through some big changes and holds some big secrets of his own. Yavenna thinks she could use her powers to escape and get away from the King. However, she realizes that if she stays she could use her powers and her standing with the King to set thousands of slaves free, realign the King’s goals, and do good for the Kingdom. Yavenna is torn on what to do, but with the wedding date approaching she is running out of time.

The main characters were well developed, likable, and enjoyable – well perhaps not the King lol.

The story was creative and intriguing! This book kept me engaged and entertained for the most part.

There are a couple of surprises and twists and turns that were enjoyable and kept me wanting more.

The pace of the book was essentially steady, however, there are a few parts that seemed to drag and cause the story to slow down or come to a screeching halt. This allowed for me to put the book down a couple times while reading it. However, the overall story was interesting and I was curious to see how it would end and what Yavenna would choose to do.

Even though I didn’t completely love this book, I still enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to other readers! Although this book is written more for the YA reader; however, this book contains a large amount of violence and killings that are not usually suitable for YA readers. So I would suggest this book also for even older readers of Fantasy/Magical Realm/Fiction genre fans as I think they would also greatly enjoy this book.

“Remnant of Power” by J.A. Deakin is the first book in the fantasy series, ‘Starlight in Aeldenarth’. The story follows Princess Yavenna of Tarhasta, whose life is changed radically when she is reluctantly forced into agreeing to marry the ruler of a neighboring kingdom, who perpetrates the very evil she most despises. Her unexpected encounters with Mal Wainwright during his search for his missing dog, Yoldas, are only one facet of the unusual adventures that will change her life. Mal has reached his eighteenth birthday only to discover that his life is about to change radically as well, and the fascinating Yavenna is one of the few things that he is grateful to encounter. The other changes…might not be quite so welcome!

This young adult story follows two people who are forced to do things they don’t want to but then discover unexpected depths to themselves from both inheritance and the way they react to challenges. The remarkable adventures each main character has allows the reader to discover what a scary but wondrous world they live in. There are many creative elements that keep this story from being a typical quest story, and I particularly like the talking wolves who can disguise themselves.

The action is a little uneven in places and I don’t feel I really got to know any of the characters in depth, but I think a younger reader would still enjoy the story itself. Those who are concerned with such things should be aware there is a considerable amount of killing and death, particularly of beings one would expect to continue being of assistance during the story, and the points of view tend to shift around sometimes. There are surprising twists and turns and some dangling threads, but there is a resolution to this story that will temporarily satisfy. Those who enjoy imaginative fantasy stories suitable for a younger reader who is not disturbed by violence will undoubtedly enjoy this story and be anxious to read the sequel, which fortuitously is already available.
